If anyone ever needed proof that Dallas can be a dangerous city to drive in, the Texas Department of Transportation keeps statistics about it. In 2008, there were more than 19,000 car crashes in Dallas:
- 142 fatal accidents
- 3,067 accidents causing serious injury
- 5,776 accidents causing more minor injuries
- 9,117 crashes causing property damage
- 1,278 car accidents of unknown severity
Most accidents occur at intersections, and when an intersection is particularly dangerous, it can be an advantage for your lawyer to be aware of that fact. When you drive in and around Dallas, it is impossible to avoid every dangerous intersection or completely eliminate the possibility of car accidents. Nonetheless, it is useful to know the particularly dangerous intersections and how to lower the risks.
Top Dangerous Intersections in the Dallas-Fort Worth Area
Dangerous intersections take many forms. Some are dangerous because the timing of the stop lights encourages people to run red lights. Others are dangerous because of blind spots or too-high speed limits.

The "Dallas Stops on Red" Problem
The City of Dallas identified some of the most dangerous intersections in Dallas County when it initiated its red-light cameras program called "Dallas Stops on Red." More than 60 surveillance cameras are installed within the Dallas city limits, with dozens of additional cameras in the immediately surrounding communities.
While the red-light camera program may encourage people to drive more safely in the most dangerous areas, it can also encourage some dangerous behavior. For example, when the light turns yellow at a monitored intersection, some drivers, fearing a ticket, react by stopping short even though it would have been safer to proceed. This can lead to rear-end collisions.
How to Minimize Your Chance of Being in an Accident at an Intersection
Drivers should take care to protect themselves and their passengers at all intersections:
- Pay attention to road signs before you reach an intersection, so you know what the traffic flow is supposed to be. Where are the turn lanes? Do both directions get a turn signal at the same time?
- When a stoplight turns green, pause before entering the intersection. If a vehicle runs a red light, you are more likely to be safely out of the way.
- If you encounter a blind intersection, approach it very slowly and alertly until your view is no longer blocked and you can see that the way is clear.
- If you are driving in an industrial area, stay alert to prevent an accident with a big-rig truck.
